James 1:22-25
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; 24 for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. 25 But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.
Quickword: A Call to be Doers of the Word
Many people of all races, genders and ethnicities hear the word of God. Here in this text, James the half-brother of Jesus calls us not to just simply hear the word of God but to become doers of the word.
It's nice to talk about love and to love ones enemies but it another level to actually put that kind of love in practice. It one thing to say we are willing to forgive, especially persons who have deliberately harmed us in anyway; putting that forgiveness in action again calls for us to not just be hearers but doers of the word.
When we only hear the word and not live the word of God, we deceive ourselves.
In order to live in the word of God, we have to be honest with ourselves and our shortcomings
When we become doers of the word, we are blessed by God.
When was the last time you took a heart look in the mirror. A look not to assess your physical appearance but a look to determine how we look in the eyes of God. Here me clearly, by no means are any of us perfect, but hearing the word of God leads to correcting our shortcomings by the grace of God. The word of God penned by James calls each of us to not only hear the word of God but to become doers of the word.
