Coming Together!

Acts 2: 40-45

40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, “Be saved from this [l]perverse generation.” 41 Then those who [m]gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. 42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ [n]doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. 44 Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, 45 and [o]sold their possessions and goods, and divided[p] them among all, as anyone had need.

Quickword: Coming Together !

As I prepared to leave for work this morning, I watched a glimpse of the election results from the midterm elections. From what I could gather the House of Representatives was trending toward Republican control and the Senate was very much up in debate with four states still being contested to include my home state of Georgia. In one of the graphics shown by the anchor, they were showing where the outstanding votes were by red and blue circles. The red were republicans areas and the demographics were predominantly white. The blue circles represented democratic area and were trending blue. As I drove in Acts chapter came to me from memory. This particular passage of scripture I used when I pastor both in Japan and Stateside. The point of this scripture then and now is what the thought of what we could do if we came together. What could we do if we could reach across party lines, racial division, what could we do if we could bridge economic disparities and cultural differences. If we could come together, what an amazing National community we could have. This lesson from acts of how the Church grew and expanded reminds me of three principles that I think we could incorporate individually and collectively.

  • Everything we do, we should do to the Glory of God

  • Everything we do, we should build up and support one another

  • Everything we do, we sho do as in this text nobody was in need

I know some would call what I'm saying Socialism and I would disagree because what I'm advocating is not dictated by government but by a personal relationship with God. That relationship should stir us to greater works and lead us to greater relationships with one another. Just imagine what we could do if we would come together.
