Luke 2: 8-10

8 Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night.

9 And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid.

Quickword: Good News In A Bad New Season!

Several Advent seasons ago, my Pastor, preached a sermon that I draw from every year. The essence of the sermon is that in the midst of a bad news season, there is still good news. Covid is still present, conflict still rages between Russia and Ukraine, the unnecessary loss of life in the Middle East continues. The lack of a comprehensive immigration policy is adversely affecting border cities and larger cities who have received an influx of people as a result of political games. RSV and this years flu strain are present, federal legislation to help families in need seems to be dead in Congress, persons are stranded at the borders trying to enter the United States, the right to vote for all persons is still under attack. Political divisions are at an all time high, the economic gulf between the have and half nots continues to grow. We seem to be stuck in a bad news season. Yet, as I reflect on the sermon from my Pastor years ago, beloved it, there is still good news in a bad news season.

- The Word of the Lord is still being delivered to all who will hear.

- There is no need to be afraid or discouraged in a bad news season.

- We have received the gift from God in the person of Jesus Christ!

Even with the seemingly unending challenges that we face in the bad news seasons of life, in today’s Quickword, I come echoing the words of the angel who appeared to the Shepard’s who were tending to their flock. I bring you Good News in a bad news season. My Brothers and Sisters, we have an advocate in Jesus Christ, who sits on the right hand of the father in Heaven interceding on our behalf. Jesus knows what we are going through, He knows about the death of a love one, He knows about the illness, He knows about the relationship, He knows about the financial struggle. That’s good news in a bad news season because not only does Jesus know about our situations and circumstances but He has the power to meet our every need. Don’t let this bad news season get you down. Keep looking to the hills from whence our help comes from, our help comes from the Lord. Whatever you need today, the good news I have for you is that help is on the way! Jesus! Jesus! Jesus! The fact that we can call His name, that’s good news in a bad news season!
