He Can Do It!

Mark 9:21-23

21 So He asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?”

And he said, “From childhood. 22 And often he has thrown him both into the fire and into the water to destroy him. But if You can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”

23 Jesus said to him, “If[d] you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”

This narrative in the Gospel of Mark gives us a glimpse into the power of our faith. Jesus engages a father who has brought his son looking for deliverance as his son was held captive by a spirit. A spirit that would cast the boy into water and fire trying to kill him. This desperate father details to Jesus that he had brought his son to the disciples of Jesus but they could not do anything. The relevant question is asked in vs 22 when the man says to Jesus, if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us. It is this phrase spoken to Jesus that garners my attention. He says to Jesus if you can? That’s the question that many of us who find ourselves facing the challenges of life in our human frailties approach Jesus with; Jesus if you can, have compassion and help us: The Quickword today is an emphatic answer to this question of Jesus ability and the answer is “He can do it “

-Like the father in this text, we can bring our cares and concerns to Jesus

- Like the disciples,,even well meaning people can’t meet our most urgent needs

- Jesus response to this father and you and I

Is that if we believe all things are possible.

Jesus can do it! Whatever you stand in need of if we believe, all things are possible. Here me today, with Faith all things are possible but it’s not easy. Faith is an action word. Faith causes us to take action. We have to bring our concerns to Jesus, we have to pray and seek the Lord, we may like this father in this text cry out, I believe but help my unbelief. Jesus can do it! He can restore that relationship, He can heal your body, He can comfort you in the loss of a love one, He can give you peace in the midst of chaos. Jesus can do it. We have to have faith and do what we can do in our power knowing that Jesus can do it. Jesus cast the spirit out of this father’s son and gives him a new life experience. My brothers and sisters, whatever you need, believe, take action and know that Jesus can do it!
