Performative or Authentic Christianity?

Titus 1: 15-16

15 To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled. 16 They profess to know God, but in works they deny Him, being [d]abominable, disobedient, and disqualified for every good work.

Quickword: Performative Christianity or Authentic Christianity?

I start this post by openly confessing, I am a sinner saved by the Grace and Mercy of God through Jesus Christ. As a result of my faith, I attempt to live a life in word and deed that is pleasing to God. There are times that I fall short but I am forgiven and redeemed by the blood of Jesus. I've become more aware of some who fall into the category of performative Christians. We find rampant today in many instances, performative Christianity. Performative Christianity is understood to be when people make a public display of being Christian because of the social capital it carries in a white Christian-dominated society, but their practice of the faith doesn’t go much beyond public displays. The current climate in America, especially the visciouness of our politics espoused by many who profess to be followers of Jesus Christ has been revealed as Performative Christianity. There is no substance to this type of Christianity, just a need and a means to maintain political power.

  • To the pure all things are pure.

  • To those who do not believe in Christ, their minds and conscience have become defiled (reprobate).

  • The question raised is do our actions align with authentic faith in Christ?

I take comfort in knowing that power rest not in the created but in the Creator. Regardless of our political affiliations, as believers in Christ, our actions should be in line with the the teachings of the Holy Scriptures. This text in Titus clearly points out that the pure will always be pure, but those who profess to know God but whose works deny Him become abominable, disobedient, and disqualified for every good work. The question we need to address individually and collectively is are we practicing Performative Christianity or Authentic Christianity?
