When the storms come…

Matthew 8:23-26

23 Now when He got into a boat, His disciples followed Him. 24 And suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves. But He was asleep. 25 Then His disciples came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!”

26 But He said to them, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?” Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. 27 So the men marveled, saying, [b]“Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?”

Quickword: When the storms come...

Last night and this morning, I spoke briefly with some family members and friends who are bracing for the impacts of a storm scheduled to land in Florida over the next few days. Preparations have and are being made individually and collectively by local, state and national governments. As I communicated with my family and friends and listen to the forecasted weather reports, what came to me is that no matter how prepared we are storms are going to come. There comes a time in all of our lives when we know about coming storms and then there are times when storms catch us by surprise. Storms of lige come because of the loss of a jod and income, storms come due to shattered relationships , storms of a medical diagnosis, storms come and go. All of us are in the cycles of storms; either we are in a storm, coming out of a storm or we are getting ready to go into storm. This is where we find Jesus abd His disciples in this text. After teaching all day they get into a boat and suddenly there arises a great storm. Jesus was asleep and the disciples woke Him up and ask, do you care anything about us, we are about to perish. Jesus arose, asked the disciples why they were so afraid, questioned them about their faith. Jesus then speaks to the storms and the winds obeyed and those who witnessed the power of Jesus marveled and and said, who can this be that even the winds and the sea obey.

  • The Storms of life are going to come.

  • Our faith will be tested during life's storms when it seems that we might perish.

  • We serve a God who still speaks to the storms in our lives.

Today, you maybe facing one of life's storms. Maybe it's an illness, maybe it's a financial storm, perhaps the trouble winds are blowing in your marriage or relationship . My Brothers and Sisters, whatever storm you are facing today, I encourage you to put your faith in God. You see I'm not overly critical of the disciples in the text because sometimes my faith falters, yet it does not failed. I've had enough storm experiences now in my life to know that Jesus still speaks and the storm winds in our lives have to obey. I pray today, wherever you are in the cycle of life storms that you hold fast to you faith. The Lord will see us through.
