When We Know WhoWe Are..,

Luke 4:20-22

20 Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 So all bore witness to Him, and marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”

Quickword: When We Know Who We Are…

When Jesus was in His hometown of Nazareth as was His custom, He went into the synagogue. Jesus was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah: Here he found where it was written: Luke 4:18-19

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,Because He has anointed MeTo preach the gospel to the poor;He has sent Me [i]to heal the brokenhearted,To proclaim liberty to the captivesAnd recovery of sight to the blind,To set at liberty those who are[j]oppressed;19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”

Our text then tells us He closed the book, gave it to the attendant and sat down. Everyone in the synagogue eyes were fixed on Him and paraphrasing, He said unto them the scripture has been fulfilled, the one whom the prophet spoke of is me, the scripture today is fulfilled. The crowd gathered and said is this not Joseph’s son? Simply stated the one who proclaims He is the promised Messiah He is only the carpenters son. Yet Jesus knew who He was. The Quickword today is to remind each of us what we can do when we know who we are.

  • Don’t be afraid to acknowledge who we are and whose we are.

  • Understand some of those who are the closest to us may not know who we are.

  • When we know who we are we can walk in the purpose and destiny of our lives.

Jesus gives us an example of how to live our lives when we know who we are. Don’t let the world’s view hinder us from living out our purpose. It does not matter to whom we were born or our past or present circumstances. It does not matter that we don’t have the advantages given to others in life. It does not matter where we live. It matters that we know who we are. As sons and daughters of the most high God we can achieve what God has purposed for our lives. The next time you feel slighted or judged perhaps based on your race, gender, ethnicity or social status, just tell people who you are and close the book. What God has for you it is for you! When we know who we are and to whom we belong, there are no limits on what we can do and what we will become in the power and Spirit of Jesus Christ.
